Concussion Care

Concussion severity can vary widely from minor dizziness and fogginess to symptoms that can make the simplest tasks nearly impossible. Triggers can range from screens and bright lights to loud sounds, exertion, quick movements and simply turning your head. Whether you've experienced a recent concussion or are dealing with lingering symptoms, addressing the injury early is key to a full recovery. At Summit, we provide personalized care to help you recover safely and return to your normal routine with confidence.

Comprehensive Evaluation

A thorough evaluation for your concussion is an essential step to success. Effective treatment only works if each trigger is assessed and the dosage of each intervention is calibrated to the sensitivity of your symptoms. Eye movements and your vestibular (inner ear) system are often times connected to concussion symptoms and are always thoroughly examined during your evaluation.

Head and Eye Movements

Eye movements are a common trigger for concussion symptoms due to the interplay of cognitive processing and your vestibular system. Proper interventions will focus on presenting you with appropriately challenging head and eye exercises that help your brain re-calibrate your vestibular system as you gradually return to activity.

Screens

Whether you work or study on a computer or simply like to relax and watch a movie, screens are nearly inescapable. Properly re-integrating screens through progressive exposure allows your brain to re-adapt to the demanding nature of screen time. Careful monitoring of your symptoms during screen re-integration is important to not only avoid flare ups but properly help your eyes and brain improve.

Exertion

Often times, exertion in itself can exacerbate your concussion symptoms. If applicable to you, this is typically examined through a structured treadmill test and progressed according to your symptoms and goals. Every treatment program is individualized so our return to play for a lacrosse goalie will be significantly different than, for example, a wrestler.

Regardless of your symptoms, returning to life before your concussion is entirely within reach. Integral to a quick recovery is an early evaluation, a comprehensive program and consistent progression in line with how your brain and body adapt. At Summit, we prioritize 1 on 1 care with the same therapist so that your plan of care maintains continuity and your needs are always the center of attention.
