For those with Osteopenia or Osteoporosis, ONERO is the only strength training program proven to improve bone mineral density. Summit is proud to be the first and only ONERO provider in the state of Maryland.
If you have been diagnosed with Osteopenia or Osteoporosis and want to take a proactive role in improving your bone mineral density, your strength and decreasing your risk of falling in the future, you are in the right place. Onero is the only evidence-based, strength training program that has been shown to improve bone mineral density in adults over the age of 50 with a diagnosis of Osteopenia or Osteoporosis.
Onero uses extensive scientific evidence (and was developed by Dr. Belinda Beck, the author of the well known LIFTMOR trial and head of The Bone Clinic in Australia) with specific exercises that directly target bone health by increasing bone density, improving bone architecture, and improving full body strength. When practiced consistently with a trained specialist, Onero training has consistently been shown to decrease the risk of falling, improve full body strength and bone mineral density. The Process To Getting Started
Generally, everyone who joins the Onero training program at Summit will begin with one or two, 60-minute 1:1 sessions with Dr. Chapman to get aquainted with the specific exercises of the program, review their specific Osteoporosis/Osteopenia history, as well as extensive strength/balance testing that will serve as a baseline for future re-testing. After your 1:1 session(s), you can sign up for the Onero training classes through the Wodify App, which Dr. Chapman will walk you through during your initial sessions. As per the LIFTMOR trial, it is highly recommended that you attend 2 classes weekly to achieve desired results.
Added note: Clients already quite familiar with the barbell squat, deadlift and overhead press will likely be more than ready to join the Onero class after their first visit. Those who are unfamiliar with these movements are generally quite ready to join Onero classes after their second 1:1 visit. Occasionally, individuals would like additional 1:1 training sessions before entering a class. We are more than happy to accomodate your need for 1:1 training until you feel ready to join the Onero classes.
Don’t worry if you’re new to these exercises—many of our clients in the osteoporosis program have little to no experience with weight lifting. We start at your level and progressively increase intensity, with personalized instruction to ensure proper form and safety.
Onero classes are capped at 8 lifters per class.
The Takeaway:
The results of the LIFTMOR trial showed significant improvements in bone mineral density after 8 months of training 2x/week. However, in addition to bone mineral density improvements, participants also saw a greater than 30% improvement in their leg strength and 40% improvement in their lower-back strength. Furthermore, they were at lower risk of falling and reported improvements in their quality of life.
